Impecunious ex-wife wins increased maintenance order fifteen years after divorce


The England and Wales Court of Appeal (CoA) has held that a man must financially support his ex-wife

Mrs Mills was initially awarded most of the couple's liquid capital (GBP230,000) when they divorced in 2002, in addition to monthly payments of GBP1,100. However, failed property investments left her in debt and unable to provide for her basic needs. The CoA held that the payouts should be increased both in amount (to GBP1,441) and in duration (for the rest of Mrs Mills' life).
